Wayang Golek, the Western Jawa Puppets

In the western part of Java there is a unique traditional art form of puppet show called wayang golek. Wayang show has been defined by UNESCO on November 7, 2003, as the legacy of very valuable culture and amazing work in the field of narrative story (Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity).

Wayang golek made of soft wood such as albizia. It is carved and painted with details and given a beautiful traditional costumes.

The dalang played the puppets with different voices for each character and move the hands and head so it looks alive.

The show called Pagelaran Wayang Golek accompanied by gamelan musical instruments. Sundanese gamelan (salendro) consists of two pieces saron, a peking, a selentem, one set of boning, a set of boning rincik, a set of kenong, a pair of gongs (kempul and goong), plus a set of kendang (a big kendang and three smaller kendang), xylophone (gambang) and a fiddle (rebab). A female singer (sinden) and male singer (alok) complement this orchestra. The performances are usually done at night, takes approximately 6-7 hours.

The story is taken from the story of Mahabharata (derivatives of Bharata) and Ramayana (adventures of Rama), but reduced and tailored to local culture, the culture of Sunda and told in Sundanese language. The popular characters because its satire and funny behaviors are Semar, Gareng, Dawala and Cepot.



Puppet show performances are usually held for celebrating circumcisions, weddings, inaugurations, held by individuals or institutions. The show is full of education and entertainment. Political parties sometimes use this puppet show as a campaign tool. Performing puppet show quite expensive so its seldom staged nowadays.
